BVA Eye Testing

What is the BVA Eye Test?

The BVA Eye Scheme is a specialist examination carried out by a certified veterinary ophthalmologist. It is designed to detect hereditary eye conditions that may not be visible during a routine vet check.

The test looks at the internal and external structures of the eye, including:

  • The lens

  • The retina

  • The cornea

  • The eyelids and surrounding tissues

Dogs are examined using advanced equipment after their pupils are dilated, allowing a detailed and accurate assessment.

Why Eye Testing Matters in Breeding

When breeding dogs—especially large, established breeds like mastiffs—it is essential to reduce the risk of passing on genetic conditions.

Eye diseases can:

  • Develop slowly and go unnoticed

  • Lead to discomfort or pain

  • Cause partial or complete blindness

  • Be inherited and passed to future generations

By using BVA eye testing, breeders can make informed decisions, ensuring only dogs with healthy eyes are used for breeding.

This helps to:

  • Protect the long-term health of the breed

  • Improve overall genetic quality

  • Give puppy buyers confidence

What Conditions Are Screened?

The BVA Eye Scheme screens for a wide range of inherited eye conditions, including:

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – a degenerative disease that can lead to blindness

  • Hereditary Cataracts – clouding of the lens affecting vision

  • Retinal Dysplasia – abnormal development of the retina

  • Multifocal Retinopathy (CMR) – an inherited condition causing retinal lesions

Some conditions may appear later in life, which is why regular testing is important.

How Often Should Dogs Be Tested?

Eye testing is not a one-off procedure.

For breeding dogs, it is recommended that:

  • Dogs are tested annually

  • Testing is kept up to date throughout their breeding life

This ensures that any late-onset conditions are identified early.

What Happens After the Test?

After examination, the dog receives an official certificate showing the results.

These results will:

  • Confirm whether the eyes are clear

  • Identify any conditions present

  • Be recorded under the BVA/Kennel Club scheme

Responsible breeders are always happy to share these certificates.

Final Thoughts

Eye testing is a simple but powerful tool in responsible dog breeding. Through the BVA Eye Scheme, breeders can actively reduce inherited disease and help ensure that future generations enjoy healthy, comfortable lives.
